Lagos State through the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps has uncovered a warehouse illegally storing banned styrofoam packs in Ikeja.
The discovery was made at No. 6 Ogusefunmi Street, off Nurudeen Street, Anifowoshe, following a tip-off from a whistleblower.
A post on Tuesday via X by Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the find, stating, “Following a tip-off by a whistleblower, Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources discovered another warehouse at No 6 Ogusefunmi Street off Nurudeen Street, Anifowoshe, Ikeja.
“The building is being used for storing the banned styrofoam packs. The operatives of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps have confiscated the packs.”
The confiscation took place on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.
In January 2024, the Lagos State Government announced the ban on the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics across the state.
Stryrofoam is used to manufacture disposable plates used in eateries.
Wahab noted that the decision was reached following the menace that single-use plastics especially the non-biodegradable Styrofoam were causing on the environment.
The ministry has been cracking down on the illegal storage and sale of banned items across the state, aiming to curb environmental pollution.
