Ogun allocates new houses to demolition victims

The Ogun State Government has approved the allocation of 15 housing units from the affordable housing programme in Itanrin, Ijebu-Ode, to residents whose houses were recently demolished at Igbegba Housing Estate.

About 15 housing units were affected in the recent demolition exercise embarked upon by the state government to intensify its urban regeneration programme in the state

The General Manager, Ogun State Housing Corporation, Mr Wale Ojo, in a statement on Wednesday, was said to have disclosed this while speaking during a visit to the site.

Ojo described the exercise as an urban regeneration programme to ensure that the buildings met the current reality, as the housing units had lost value.

“Residents were given four months’ notice before the demolition exercise and the mortgages have also been extended to the people at a discounted interest rate.

“Some of the residents have also keyed into the affordable housing programme of the state government.

“The government is aware of the present economy of the country and, as a result, has made it mandatory to find succour for the residents of the estate by giving them relief measures, including the opportunity to key into the affordable housing scheme, as well as the avenue to access loans,” the statement read.

One of the affected residents, Mr Akeem Rasheed, said the government gave them a four-month notice to vacate the quarters so that the regeneration exercise could commence in earnest.

He, however, pleaded that the promise of relief measures should not be thwarted at the end of the day.

Rasheed said if the government kept its promise, residents would be grateful, adding that the gesture by the state government would remain indelible in their minds.
