A POSSIBLE LIGHT IN AN IMPOSSIBLE DARKNESS: THE CASE OF JOSEPH OLASUNKANMI TEGBE THE NEW MINISTER OF POWER

Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe where have you been?

You are bringing possibilities that no one ever thought possible into a  chequered electricity environment and that provision of improved electricity supply should not take forever. The chaos in the electricity sector was obvious and damning in the last 10 years and no one seems to be hopeful anymore. You could feel the frustration of Nigerians. Your actions are gradually changing the landscape.

Now we know why the power sector had been in the sorry state previously: lack of knowledge, skill and competence. Nigeria now have the difference of good ethical  sense of commitment and duty that makes the success story.

You have demonstrated that it should  never take citizens outrage and outcry to accomplish basic routine assignments like providing electricity for Nigerians.

The holy book says you save the best wines for the last and the Benins say you save your best masquerade for the last dance. Those who know me can attest I have NEVER singled out a government employee for praise but when you demonstrate that bringing electricity to impossible darkness can be achieved by promoting a work ethic, moral rectitude, quality service you make a difference.

Since May 2026 you have demonstrated that only quality input can produce quality output and that there no short cut to the provision of electricity in Nigeria. You time is short but your efforts have clearly shown that only Nigerians can make Nigeria work. You have also revealed that great societies are built when every Nigerian does his or her best and when meritocracy is promoted over mediocrity the results are palpable.

Lee Kuan Yee was right when he stated in his book Third World to First World how he used Singaporeans and not foreigners to build one of the strongest economies in the world from the ruins of war. You are building Nigeria electricity from the ruins of incompetence and neglect.

You action is  demonstrating that the building of  any nation is divergent and multidimensional and electricity is cardinal to such divergence. History will liken you to

Ramón Méndez Galain, the physicist and former Energy Secretary of Uruguay who spearheaded the country’s historic transition to near-100% renewable electricity.

Appointed in 2008 by President Tabaré Vázquez, Méndez Galain designed and executed a multi-party national plan that successfully shifted Uruguay’s power grid from 50% fossil fuel dependency to roughly 98% to 99% green energy.

This brief acknowledgement is for you to do more and not decend into complacency because on your efforts and actions rest the journey to Nigeria government one trillion dollar economy.
